Unlimited Everything Must Go Free Shopping Day

UNLIMITED EVERYTHING MUST GO SHOPPING DAY.jpg

On  Sunday, September 13th from 1:00pm - 5:00pm, we'll be having an Unlimited Everything Must Go Free Shopping Day for Everyone - members and non-members.

Help us to redistribute everything back into the community. Shop for your family, friends, and neighbors.

Plan Ahead.jpg

We'll have social distancing shopping protocols in place:

  • Face masks or facial coverings are REQUIRED; no exceptions. If you have a medical condition and cannot wear a mask please do not come but rather please ask someone else who can wear a mask to shop for you.

  • If you are feeling sick or have been in contact with someone else who has been feeling sick, please do not come but rather ask someone else to come shop for you.

  • PLEASE DO NOT BRING DONATIONS FOR THE FREE STORE.

  • Please do not bring any kids younger than 12 years old, and all minors should be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  • Entrance through the main gate off Hadley. Exit through the door leading to the alley to Comstock.

  • All shopping will be done in the downstairs rooms, upstairs balcony, and Whittier Free Store room.

  • We'll have one directional flow and spacing requirements. Only people who live in the same household should shop in the same group. Otherwise, you can shop together at a distance. Please be patient if there is a line of people.

  • 2-3 individual shoppers or one household may shop each room at a time. You’ll generally have about 10 minutes in each room but may vary depending on the flow of people and number of people waiting in line.

  • Please follow instructions from volunteer staff.

  • There are no fitting rooms and you may not try on clothing. No returns.

  • We'll have plenty of hand sanitizer.

  • We'll have plenty of old bags but feel free to bring your own if you need some that are larger and more sturdy.

  • As you shop, you will place your items in your own bags.

  • You will not need to check out after completing your free shopping. If you wish, you may place your items in your car and return for more shopping. Again, please be patient if there is a line.

While these social distancing shopping protocols are meant to keep everyone safe, please understand that you shop at your own risk as you do at any other retail environment.

We recommend that you thoroughly clean all items before use.

You may see larger items or furniture. These are also available on a first come first served basis. Let us know and we’ll arrange an alternate pick up day and time (if you can’t take it on this day).

Volunteers Needed and Appreciated

The Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab will officially be closed. This is going to be a lot of work to relocate items from upstairs to downstairs. This will allow us to clear out everything upstairs for the move out while also giving everyone easier shopping access downstairs. Our small team could sure use some help! If you're able to volunteer, feel free to send us an email to volunteer@gocatalyst.org to let us know. Our work days are:

  • Thursday, August 27th from 5-8pm

  • Sunday, August 30th from 1-5pm

  • Thursday, September 3rd from 5-8pm

We could also use some help on the Unlimited Shopping Day on Sunday, September 13th. Volunteers would help us keep the line flowing and making sure that everyone is following safe social distancing. Send us an email to volunteer@gocatalyst.org if you can help!

Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab Closing

WFS-AWL Closing 2020.jpg

The Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab will be closing in September 2020.

In a nutshell, we've been fortunate and thankful to have been invited by First Christian Church of Whittier to occupy the space so that we could serve the community for the past 5 years. The congregation has since closed their services at the end of 2019 but have graciously allowed us to continue using the space. We've recently been informed that they have had to lease the entire church campus to another large church which means we'll need to move out of the space as soon as possible.

Rather than finding a new space to open and operate in, we have decided to close down our Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab programs. But it's now more than ever during this time of social distancing, social isolation, anxiety, and economic uncertainty that we need ways of connecting with neighbors and helping each other in whatever ways that we can. So we're excited about new possibilities for helping others to start free sharing operations (FSOs).

Safer at Home

As the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic continues to impact our world and communities, please remember that we are all “Safer at Home.” We align with state and county orders to stay home to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus so the Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab will remain closed until further notice. We encourage everyone to stay safe and stay connected. Wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and practice social distancing by maintaining 6 foot distance from others and stay home unless going out for essentials. Be sure to check in on your family, friends, and neighbors!

PLEASE NOTE: Since we are closed, we are not accepting any donations at this time. If you are a social service agency that would like to request donations of clothing for your clients, we can make arrangements for you to pick up items. Please contact us here if you’ll like to discuss further.

Whittier Free Store and Artisan Work Lab Closed

Coronavirus - WFS - AWL Closed March 2020.jpg

Hi everyone!

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is a concern for many people and it’s important for us to remain calm and to take reasonable precautions. The health and safety of our members and volunteers is important to us and since many of our members include vulnerable populations like the elderly and children, and since our operations involves many people touching the same items (donors, volunteers, shoppers), we’ve decided to close the Whittier Free Store and the Artisan Work Lab this Sunday, March 15th, 2020. We’d also normally be closed on March 22nd and 29th for our usual volunteer days off. So we’ll be closed from now through the end of this month. We will post announcements about our April schedule at the end of this month. We apologize for the inconvenience!

Many institutions and organizations like ours are following the recommendations of public health officials to implement social distancing as an effort to "flatten the curve" to curb the number of new cases of infection. This is important because if the number of new infections increases too rapidly, it can overwhelm the capacity of emergency room and health care facilities.

As we all remain calm and try to be aware of the physical contact we're having with others, please also remember to apply empathy for those who are sick, empathy for those who have medical conditions that could compromise their immune response, and empathy for those who may experience greater racial discrimination because of the pandemic's origins. Social distancing doesn't have to mean community distancing and so we encourage everyone to look out for each other - family, friends, neighbors, and fellow community members.

Here is some information you may find helpful:

There is currently no vaccine to prevent the coronavirus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. Here are steps, recommended by the CDC, that you can take to keep you and your family safe and healthy:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

• Please note that CDC does NOT recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including the coronavirus.

Take care everyone and we hope to see you soon!

Special Shopping Day for Supporting Members

While regular membership is FREE, people who want to become Supporting Members give $25 per year to help us cover our expenses. We always say that membership is free but it's not free for us to operate. As a thank you, we are having a special shopping day just for our Supporting Members on Sunday, Dec. 8th from 3pm - 5pm. We're normally closed to the public and we'll be setting out a lot more inventory in the free store for our unlimited shopping day on Dec. 15th, but Supporting Members will get a first chance to shop early. We'll also be setting out some new items in our Supporting Members section. This opportunity is available to all current Supporting Members and anyone who would like to become a new Supporting Member. This type of membership is good for 12 months after your $25 donation. We'll have food and refreshments. We'll also be planning more Supporting Member activities after the new year. We'd love to hear your input on that!

If you plan to come to this special shopping day, please RSVP so we can get a rough count to plan for food and refreshments. Thanks!
